How to share location safely with deployed family members.

Location sharing between a deployed service member and family at home creates a persistent data record with real operational risks. The right tool minimises that record, and the right protocol limits when the sharing happens and with whom. Done correctly, it addresses the legitimate need to maintain family awareness without creating a persistent surveillance record of the service member’s movements.

Why this is more complicated than it looks

Location sharing apps are built for convenience. They store location history, sync to cloud servers owned by the app provider, and often share data with third parties. The terms of service that govern what those companies do with your location data are long, updated frequently, and not designed to protect operational security.

For most families that exposure is acceptable, but for a military family with one partner deployed in a sensitive environment, the service member’s location data becomes operationally sensitive. A persistent cloud-stored record of where a service member has been, over weeks or months, is exactly the kind of data that adversaries with data collection capabilities would find useful. The specific risks that open-source intelligence collection poses for military families extend to location data, not just social media posts.

What tools minimise exposure

Signal’s note-to-self feature and its standard messaging allow location sharing without the data passing through a third-party location service. Sharing your location via Signal sends it to the recipient only, through end-to-end encrypted channels, without storing it in a persistent location history database. Signal does not retain this data. The tradeoff is that it requires both parties to use Signal and requires the sharing to be intentional rather than continuous.

Apple’s Find My works through Apple’s infrastructure and stores location data on Apple servers. It is end-to-end encrypted between the devices in the sharing relationship, meaning Apple cannot read the location data, but it does create a persistent record in iCloud that is accessible through Apple’s systems under a valid legal request. For most military families that tradeoff is acceptable, but it stops being acceptable as soon as the service member’s location is classified or operationally sensitive.

Google’s location sharing works similarly but through Google’s infrastructure with Google’s data practices. Google’s history of compliance with government data requests and their advertising business model make their location products the least appropriate choice for sensitive location sharing. The convenience is high, but the underlying data practices were never built with operational security in mind.

The protocol matters as much as the tool

Continuous passive location sharing creates a detailed record of movement patterns over time. Even with a tool that handles the data appropriately, continuous sharing is more exposure than point-in-time sharing. The operational discipline is to share location intentionally when there is a specific reason, not to leave a continuous sharing session running indefinitely.

Define with your family in advance what the sharing protocol is. A daily check-in message that includes a general location is less exposed than a live location feed. A pre-arranged signal that means “I’m OK and in this general area” reduces the need for precise location sharing while maintaining the reassurance the family needs.

Know when to stop sharing. During operations, travel on sensitive routes, or periods where location information would be operationally significant, location sharing should stop. This should be agreed in advance so that a gap in location updates does not cause unnecessary alarm at home. The deployment communication protocol should cover this explicitly before the service member leaves.

The metadata problem

Every photo taken on a smartphone includes GPS coordinates in the image metadata by default. A photo shared in a family messaging group to show “I’m doing fine” includes the precise location where the photo was taken. Platform handling of this metadata varies. Some strip it automatically, but many do not. Documented cases of metadata exposing precise locations involved the same mechanism applied to operational environments.

Disable location data in your camera app before deployment. On iPhone, go to Settings, Privacy, Location Services, Camera, and set it to Never. On Android, the setting is in the Camera app’s settings. This prevents new photos from carrying location data without affecting photos already taken with that metadata embedded.

Is it ever appropriate to use commercial location sharing apps during deployment?

For most non-sensitive deployments, yes. The risk level varies significantly by where the service member is deployed and what they are doing. A support role at a large established base presents a different threat model than a small team in a sensitive location. The tool choice and the sharing protocol should reflect the actual threat model, not a blanket policy in either direction.

What if my unit prohibits personal device use during deployment?

Then the location sharing question is resolved by policy. The communication protocol with family becomes one of pre-arranged schedules and limited channels. Establishing this protocol clearly before departure reduces the anxiety on both sides during communication blackout periods.

Should both spouses share location, or only the deployed one?

One-way is the right default. The deployed service member shares limited, low-resolution location to the spouse at home, on the spouse’s terms and timing. The spouse at home should not share back as a routine. Two-way sharing creates two surfaces of exposure when one is enough, and the spouse-at-home location is often the more operationally useful piece for an adversary, because it reveals the home, the school run, and the daily pattern that intelligence collection actually targets.

Does using a VPN on the family device change the analysis?

Marginally. A VPN on the family device hides the IP address from the destination service, which limits one type of network-level fingerprinting. It does not affect what a location-sharing app produces, because the app is reporting GPS coordinates that the user has authorised. The location data still reaches the app provider, the app provider still stores it, and the app provider still complies with subpoenas the same way. VPN is a useful baseline. It is not a substitute for restricting the location-sharing channel itself.


There’s no perfect setup. Anyone selling you perfect is selling fear. The goal is simple: make yourself a harder target than the person next to you.
