You go to their site, click ‘Generate account’, and receive a randomly generated 16-digit number. That number is your account. You fund it with a voucher, cash by post, or cryptocurrency. No identity attached at any stage. No recovery option if you lose the number.

This is not a feature. It’s an architectural decision. Mullvad cannot hand over your identity to authorities because they don’t have it. Not as policy. As fact.

The audit that matters most

In April 2023, Swedish police arrived at Mullvad’s offices with a search warrant. They wanted server data. Mullvad’s team invited them in, showed them the servers, and demonstrated that the servers contained no user data. The police left without taking anything. Because there was nothing to take.

The payment model and what it means

Five euros per month. Flat. No annual commitment. No promotional pricing that traps you at a higher rate after year one.

Payment by cash in an envelope sent by post is explicitly supported and documented on their site. This sounds archaic. For specific threat profiles, it’s the only payment method that creates no financial trace.

What Mullvad does not have

No split tunnelling on all platforms. The feature exists on some but not consistently across iOS, Android, macOS, and Windows.

No ecosystem. Mullvad is a VPN and only a VPN. No email, no password manager, no bundled tools. For users who want separation between tools for OPSEC reasons, it’s an advantage.

Who Mullvad is actually for
