Mullvad VPN review 2026. The most anonymous VPN tested.
Short answer
Mullvad is the most anonymous consumer VPN available. No email required. No identity attached at any stage. Cash payment by post accepted. Swedish police visited their servers with a warrant in 2023 and found nothing, because nothing is stored. Mullvad does not run an affiliate programme. We make no money from recommending it.
Mullvad doesn’t have an affiliate programme. We make no money from recommending it. That’s the first thing you need to know.
The second thing: it’s the most operationally serious consumer VPN we’ve tested. And the gap between it and everything else is larger than most people realise.
What makes Mullvad different from everything else
To create a Mullvad account, you need nothing. No email address. No name. No payment card linked to an identity.
You go to their site, click ‘Generate account’, and receive a randomly generated 16-digit number. That number is your account. You fund it with a voucher, cash by post, or cryptocurrency. No identity attached at any stage. No recovery option if you lose the number.
This is not a feature. It’s an architectural decision. Mullvad cannot hand over your identity to authorities because they don’t have it. Not as policy. As fact.
The audit that matters most
In April 2023, Swedish police arrived at Mullvad’s offices with a search warrant. They wanted server data. Mullvad’s team invited them in, showed them the servers, and demonstrated that the servers contained no user data. The police left without taking anything. Because there was nothing to take.
This is the only meaningful audit of a VPN’s no-logs claims: a physical visit by law enforcement with legal authority. Mullvad passed it in real conditions, not in a controlled evaluation. (See: free VPNs sell your data.)
The payment model and what it means
Five euros per month. Flat. No annual commitment. No promotional pricing that traps you at a higher rate after year one.
Payment by cash in an envelope sent by post is explicitly supported and documented on their site. This sounds archaic. For specific threat profiles, it’s the only payment method that creates no financial trace.
What Mullvad does not have
No split tunnelling on all platforms. The feature exists on some but not consistently across iOS, Android, macOS, and Windows.
No ecosystem. Mullvad is a VPN and only a VPN. No email, no password manager, no bundled tools. For users who want separation between tools for OPSEC reasons, it’s an advantage.
Who Mullvad is actually for
Mullvad is for people where the creation of an account itself is a risk. Journalists registering tools from field locations. Sources who need to verify their communications are clean before making contact.
For everyday use where the primary concern is ISP monitoring or public Wi-Fi, the operational anonymity of Mullvad is beyond what the threat model requires. Proton is sufficient and has more features. (See: Proton vs Mullvad comparison.)

Why doesn’t Mullvad have an affiliate programme?
Mullvad’s business model doesn’t depend on referral commissions. We recommend them precisely because there’s no commission involved.

There’s no perfect setup. Anyone selling you perfect is selling fear. The goal is simple: make yourself a harder target than the person next to you.
