What it means in practice
A BeenVerified report includes the standard data-broker bundle (addresses, phones, emails, family members) plus distinctive features that surface in court records: criminal records when available, civil judgments, marriage and divorce filings, traffic violations, professional licenses, sex-offender registry matches. The product is positioned for “background checks” but operates outside FCRA because it explicitly disclaims use for FCRA purposes (employment, housing, credit), pushing that liability onto the user. The cross-broker family graph (Intelius, Truthfinder, etc. share underlying data sources) means an opt-out at BeenVerified alone does not silence the same data appearing on the sister sites.
Who uses it, and against whom
Customer base skews toward consumers running self-serve background checks: dating-app users vetting matches, parents researching coaches and tutors, neighbors checking new arrivals, casual investigators on family disputes. Sales and marketing run heavy on TV ads and YouTube pre-roll, which is why the brand recognition is high relative to the underlying data uniqueness (most data is shared with the sister brands). The threat surface for a privacy-conscious operator: a curious neighbor or a hostile ex types your name into the BeenVerified search and pays $26 to surface every address, every phone, every prior name change, every relative.

Opt out at beenverified.com/app/optout (10 minutes, requires email confirmation, processes in 7-14 days). Then opt out separately at the four sister sites: intelius.com/opt-out, truthfinder.com/opt-out, ussearch.com/opt-out, instantcheckmate.com/opt-out. Cancel any prior BeenVerified subscription you forgot about (the auto-renewal is aggressive); the FTC has open enforcement actions against the parent company over recurring-billing practices.
